One of my best friends is joining the Army this week. Will he be sent to Iraq?
He’s signing up this week, and supposedly gets sent to bootcamp in about five weeks or less. I’m really worried for him, because of the war in Iraq, and how desperate the Army has been for infantry on the ground. He insists he’s not going to get sent over there, since his specialty training (Satellite Communications) is 36 weeks or something. He got a 76 on the ASVAB, but I keep imagining that if you’re a warm body, who’s gone through boot and can carry a gun, they’ll send you over. How likely do you think it is that he’ll end up in Iraq?
LOL!! Did he ask what was involved in satellite communications? Most chances are he will go to Iraq or Afghanistan. All MOS are eligible to go. Most, if not all, are used in both countries.
Major Duties: The satellite communication systems operator-maintainer supervises, installs, operates, and maintains strategic and tactical multi-channel satellite communications ground terminals, systems, networks, communication security (COMSEC) devices, and associated equipment. Operates and performs preventive maintenance checks and services (PMCS) on assigned communications equipment, vehicles, and power generators.

Well, bct(basic combat training) is 9 weeks long and then he’s ait is 36… It wont be until he completes all the training, hope by then the need of troops over in Iraq will be down. But as long as we are in Iraq and he is done training he has the chance of being deployed, that’s part of it. Who knows he might, he could end up anywhere that’s part of the perks though he could get station in Germany or Japan.

Your friend has a chance of being sent to Iraq. but, he might not go. We have military bases all over the world so he may get lucky and be sent to Hawaii.

Maybe he’ll go, maybe not.
He could get sent to a Training Unit or Center.

He’ll probably go. There is a lot of sand in Iraq. Sand is horrible on equipment.
I talked to a parent yesterday whose son was a computer expert. He was in Iraq working on computers because of the sand.
Go troops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

He may or may not go. Depends on how lucky he is. He may be one to be stationed state side until the war is done or he may get lucky and when he’s done with AIT we won’t be at war. It’s hard to say. He is definitely deployable once his basic and AIT are done. There are no grantees. My cousin was in Iraq with the same MOS (Satellite Communications) so that doesn’t grantee he won’t go.

His MOS is a service support mission which means following his training he will most likely be assigned duties in a secure rear area of operations if he gets deployed to one of the two war zone. He will most likely find himself working in a Brigade or higher headquarters communications section…

A friend whose son graduated in June from the same satellite course is leaving in a few weeks for Iraq. His job will keep him safer than the infantry soldiers for the most part.
